The Gifts of The Holy Spirit

WISDOM: helps us to judge things around us as God sees them, and to choose what leads us closer to God. Through wisdom of nature, every event in history, and all the ups and downs of our life take on deeper meaning and purpose. The wise person sees where the Spirit of God is at work and is able to share that insight with others. Wisdom is the fullest expression of the gifts of knowledge and understanding.

UNDERSTANDING: helps us to study and know always better the truths of our holy Faith. The gift of understanding is the abikity to comprehend how a person must live her or his life as a follower of Jesus. Through the gift of understanding, Christians realize that the Gospel tells them not just who Jesus is; it also tells them who we are. The gift of understanding is closely related to the gifts of knowledge and wisdom.

RIGHT JUDGMENT: helps us to judge correctly and to act wisely, as we know God would want us to. The gift of right judgment is the ability to know the difference between right and wrong and then to choose what is good. It helps us to act on and live out what Jesus has taught. In the exercise of right judgment, many of the other gifts-especially understanding, wisdom, and often courage-come into play in the Christian’s daily life.

COURAGE: helps us to do great things for God joyfully, without fear, even if at times it might be very hard. The gift of courage enables us to take risks and to overcome fear as we try to live out the Gospel of Jesus. Followers of Jesus confront many challenges and even danger-the risk of being laughed at, the fear of rejection, and, for some believers, the fear of physical harm and even death. The Spirit gives Christians the strength to confront and ultimately overcome such challenges.

KNOWLEDGE: helps us to see the things of this world as coming from God, our Creator. The gift of knowledge is the ability to comprehend the basic meaning and message of Jesus. Jesus revealed the will of God, his Father, and taught people what they need to know to achieve fullness of life and, ultimately, salvation. The gift of knowledge is closely related to the gifts of understanding and wisdom.

PIETY or LOVE: helps us to love God as our Father and to love and respect persons and things that belong to God. This gift gives the Christian a deep sense of respect for God. Jesus spoke of his Father, God, As “Abba”; a very intimate name similar to “daddy” or “pappa”. Through this gift we come before God with the openness and trust of small children, totally dependent on the One who created us.

REVERENCE (Fear of the Lord): helps us to be afraid of offending God because sin tears us away from God whom we love. Though we can approach God with the trust of little children, we are also often aware of God’s total majesty, unlimited power, and desire for justice. A child may want to sit on the lap of his loving Father, but sometimes the believer will fall on her knees int he presence of the Creator of the universe.

VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS – Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, Lord of Light. From the clear celestial height,

Thy pure beaming radiance give, Come, thou Father of the poor,

Come with treasures which endure, Come, thou light of all that live!

Thou, of all consolers best; Thou, the soul’s delightsome guest,

Dost refreshing peace bestow: Thou in toil art comfort sweet:

Pleasant coolness in the heat: Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal, Light divine, Visit thou these hearts of thine,

And our inmost being fill: If thou take thy grace away:

Nothing pure in man will stay, All his good is turned to ill.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew, On our dryness pour they dew,

Wash the stains of guilt away, Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore, Thee confess and thee adore,

In thy seven fold gifts descend: Give them comfort when they die!

Give them life with thee on high; Give them joys that never end.

Lord Jesus Christ, you have united us in the Sacrament of Matrimony. For this we are grateful. We thank you for all the love that we are able to bestow upon ourselves. We thank you for all the joys that come to us from this reciprocal communion. We thank you for our children and for the security of our home.

We ask you: Keep alive our love everyday. Do not permit that it will be marred by monotony or by the feverish activity of life. Do not permit that words ever fail us or that we live side by side as strangers. Show us how we may renew our common life at every moment. Make us tolerate those peculiarities of the other that often arouse our anger. Render us ready to forgive and to reconcile. Help us in our decision.

Give us the strength to bear every suffering together, every trial which comes our way. Daily renew in us your grace. Amen.

PEACE PRAYER – St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

Where there is hatred … let me sow love.

Where there is injury… pardon.

Where there is discord… unity.

Where there is doubt… faith.

Where there is error… truth.

Where there is despair… hope.

Where there is sadness… joy.

Where there is darkness… light.

Oh Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek:

To be consoled… as to console.

To be understood… as to understand.

To be loved… as to love.

For:

It is in giving… that we receive.

It is pardoning… that we are pardoned.

It is in dying… that we are born to eternal life.

Morning Prayer

Lord, in the quiet of this morning hour,

I come to thee for peace, for wisdom, power

To view the world today through love-filled eyes;

Be patient, understanding, gentle, wise;

To see beyond what seems to be, and know

Thy children as Thou knowest them; and so

Naught but the good in anyone behold;

Make deaf my ears to slander that is told:

Silence my tongue to aught that is unkind;

Let only thoughts that bless dwell in my mind.

Let me so kindly be, so full of cheer,

That all I meet may feel Thy presence near.

O clothe me in They beauty, this I pray

Let me reveal Thee, Lord, through all the day.

O Help of Christians, my Mother be,

To thee I pledge my fidelity:

Mary my mother, my guide thou be,

With thee and Jesus, I’ll ever be.

The Magnificat of Mary – Luke 1:46-55

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;

my spirit rejoices in God my savior.

For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness;

behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.

The Mighty One has done great things for me,

and holy is his name.

His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him.

He has shown might with his arm,

dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.

He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones

but lifted up the lowly.

The hungry he has filled with good things;

the rich he has sent away empty.

He has helped Israel his servant,

remembering his mercy,

according to his promise to our fathers,

to Abraham and to his descendants forever.

Take my memory, fill me with the remembrance of Your mercies to me.

Take my will, my God, may Your will be the rule of my life.

Take my eyes, my Jesus, let them behold You in every face and every event.

Take my ears, help me to be attentive to Your voice and to the gentle whispering of Your Spirit within me.

Take my lips, my God, let them sing the glory of Your name.

Prayer To Mary Help Of Christians

Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christians,

We pray to you, like Don Bosco and with him, who at this moment prays with us for all young people who sincerely thirst for some kind of religious and personal certitude.

O Virgin Spouse of the “Yes”, open the lips of so many that are almost sealed, who know how to plead, but not to pray anymore, who do not want to speak to this God who is Father, who loved them so much that he gave his only Son who was born from you and has become our Brother.

Mother of the Church and our Mother, you who personify the gifts of the Spirit, make our communities living Gospels so that these gifts may be desired and practiced in us. Teach us love and justice, Teach us peace.

Obtain for us a new surge of the Holy Spirit, Mary, our help, our sweetness and our assurance, may hope never be suffocated, may the dignity of work never be denied, may faith never be extinguished in any heart but may love reign in all and over all. Amen.

Prayer For Prisoners

Lord God Almighty, Father of Mercy, hear our prayers for those in prison, who have been forced into evil ways and practices and have failed due to their own frailties, and be merciful to the innocent.

Father, forgive them and enlighten their hearts and minds, to realize their own weakness and help them to repent and comfort them in their sufferings. Inspire their dear ones, families and the society to accept them inspite of all their defects and failures. Lord, help the victims to forgive them.

Bless all those who are working with them and for them. Bless the prison authorities that they may be kind, gentle and understanding towards those under their care. Lord, stretch out your healing hands and touch all our brethren in the prison and help them to lead a renewed life. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mama Mary, Pray for us.

Prayer For Priests – St. John Mary Vianney – Patron of Priest

O Jesus, eternal Priest, keep your priests within the shelter of Your Sacred Heart, where none may touch them. Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Your Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily wet with Your Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood.

Let Your holy love surround them and shield them from the world’s contagion. Bless their labours with abundant fruit and may the souls to whom their minister be their joy and consolation, here and in heaven, their beautiful and everlasting crown. Amen. St. Theresa of Lisieux

Prayers for the Dead

Intro: We pray for the dead because we believe in the resurrection that leads to life without end. We pray also because, in the communion of saints the Lord welcomes our fraternal assistance. Our hope overcomes our pain and we can say with St. Augustine: “If you only knew the immense mystery of heaven where we shall live eternally! The thought that pervades us is: would you cry if you loved me? I am in the warm embrace of an infinitely good God. The things of earth are so little in comparison. I will continue to love you, to tenderly walk with you even though you do not see me, for I now live in unspeakable joy.

In the anxieties of life, think of this eternal home where you will be united with your loved ones who are living in joy and endless bliss. Do not cry if you really love me.”

The Lord of Life: Lord of life, true friend of humanity, you were moved at the grief of the widow of Naim and you restored her son to life for her. You wept at the tomb of Lazarus your friend and gave him back to his beloved sisters. Yet in your great love for us you did not hesitate to die on the cross that we might be free from sin and selfishness. Grant that the memory of all those who have preceded us to their heavenly abode may not be a source of sadness and resignation but rather an impetus to serve our suffering sisters and brothers, that one day we may all come to live with you forever in heaven. Amen.

Let us pray: O God, Jesus our Savior shines as the bright hope of a blessed resurrection. When we are saddened by the certainty of dying he consoles us with the promise of future immortality. Lord, for your faithful people, life is changed not ended and while the abode of our earthly dwelling is destroyed, an eternal resting place is prepare for us in heaven. We therefore rejoice that, though death is our common inheritance we are assured that one day we shall come to live with you for all eternity in heaven. Amen.

A Daily Prayer to St. Joseph

St. Joseph, guardian of the family of Nazareth, look upon our families. Help them to find that kind of work which will assure “nuclear families” of a dignified life; help children to enjoy the full, undivided affection of their parents; help newlyweds to be in a position to begin their married life with serenity and commitment.

St. Joseph help families to become the agents of a renewed evangelisation, one sustained and accompanied by the witness of charity.

As happened in the family of Nazareth, in you family, make our families privileged places for Christ.

St. Joseph, glory of home life and model of workers, help us.

Under your protection, may the family and labour, here and everywhere, bear fruit to everlasting life.

Joseph, most faithful, to you we turn. Do not cease interceding for us; do not cease interceding for the whole human family.

Prayer Before Holy Communion

Come, O blessed Savior, and nourish my soul with heavenly Food, the Food which contains every sweetness and every delight. Come, Bread of Angels, and satisfy the hunger of my soul. Come, glowing Furnace of Charity, and enkindle in my heart the flame of divine love. Come, Light of the World, and enlighten the darkness of my mind. Come. King of Kings, and make me obedient to your holy will. Come, loving Savior, and make me meek and humble. Come, Friend of the Sick, and heal the infirmities of my body and the weakness of my soul. Come, Good Shepherd, my God and my All, and take me to yourself.

O most holy Mother, Mary Immaculate, prepare my heart to receive my Savior.

Prayer After Holy Communion

Dear Lord, help me to remove from my mind every thought or opinion which You would not sanction, every feeling from my heart which You would not approve.

Grant that I may spend the hours of the day gladly working with You according to Your will.

Help me just for today and be with me in it. In the long hours of work, that I may not grow weary or slack in serving You.

In conversations, that they may not be to me occasions of uncharitableness.

In the day’s worries and disappointements, that I may be patient with myself and with those around me.

In moments of fatigue and illness, that I may be mindful of others rather than of myself.

In temptations, that I may be generous and loyal, so that when the day is over I may lay it at Your feet, with its successes which are all Yours, and its failures which are all my own, and feel that life is real and peaceful, and blessed when spent with You as the Guest of my soul. Amen.

Petitions of St. Ignatius to our Holy Redeemer

A Prayer For Justice And Mercy

Jesus, united with the Father and the Holy Spirit, Give us your compassion for those in prison. Mend in mercy the broken in mind and memory. Soften the hard of heart, captives of anger. Free the innocent; parole the trustworthy. Awaken the repentance that restores hope. May prisoners’ families persevere in their love. Jesus, heal the victims of crime. They live with the scars. Lift to eternal peace those who die. Grant victims’ families the forgiveness that heals. Give wisdom to lawmakers and to those who judge. Instill prudence and patience in those who guard. Make those in prison ministry bearers of Your Light, for all of us need your mercy! Amen.

A Prayer For Forgiveness

Be merciful to me, O GOD, because of your constant love. Because of your great mercy wipe away my sins! Wash away all my evil and make me clean from my sins! I recognize my faults; I am always conscious of my sins. I have sinned against you-only against you and done what you consider evil. So you are right in judging me; you are justified in condemning me, I have been evil from the day I was born; from the time I was conceived, I have been sinful. Sincerity and truth are what you require; fill my mind with your wisdom. Remove my sin and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear the sounds of joy and gladness; and though you have crushed me and broken me, I will be happy once again. Close your eyes to my sins and wipe out all my evil. Create a pure heart in me O GOD, and put a new and loyal spirit in me. Do not banish me from your presence; do not take your holy spirit away from me. Give me again the joy that comes from your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Then I will teach sinners your commands, and they will turn back to you. Spare my life, O GOD, and save me, and I will gladly proclaim your righteousness. Help me to speak, LORD, and I will praise you. You do not want sacrifices, or I would offer them; you are not pleased with burnt offerings. My sacrifice is a humble spirit, O GOD; you will not reject a humble and repentant heart. O GOD, be kind to Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then you will be pleased with proper sacrifices and with our burnt offerings; and bulls will be sacrificed on your altar.

Prayer For A Family

O dear Jesus, I humbly implore You to grant Your special graces to our family. May our home be the shrine of peace, purity, love, labour and faith. I beg You, dear Jesus, to protect and bless all of us, absent and present, living and dead.

O Mary, loving Mother of Jesus and our Mother, pray to Jesus for our family, for all the families of the world, to guard the cradle of the newborn, the schools of the young and their vocations.

Blessed Saint. Joseph, Holy guardian of Jesus and Mary, assist us by your prayer in all the necessities of life. Ask of Jesus that special grace which he granted to you, to watch over our home at the pillow of the sick and the dying, so that with Mary and with you, heaven may find our family unbroken in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Amen.
